Hi, my name is Rich, and I used to be an over-packer.
There… I said it!
I was the person who brought six pairs of shoes for a two-day trip. The one who packed a “just-in-case” outfit for every climate zone on Earth. I was the person who had everything from a bathrobe to a tuxedo because “you just never know.” And don’t even get me started on my collection of pouches within pouches. It was like nesting dolls of anxiety in an overpacked carry-on.
But then… something happened.
I downsized.
And I lived to tell the tale!
The Breaking Point
Like most travel trauma stories, mine began in an airport. I was sprinting through Terminal C with a too-heavy carry-on, a crossbody that weighed more than a toddler, and a venti iced coffee that would inevitably betray me.
As I body-checked my way through the crowd, rolling my eyes at the people stopping abruptly in the middle of the terminal, I looked down at my stack of bags and thought to myself: “I’m not the problem, you are!”
I needed something smarter. Sleeker. Lighter. Preferably a bag that didn’t try to take out my ankles every time I turned a corner.
Enter: The Bento Bag by Nomad Lane
You know when you meet someone and they just “get” you? That’s what happened when I met the Bento Bag. I realize I may sound crazy, and yes, this is a sponsored post, but this bag changed the way I travel… truly. (Side note: the two of us are *never* going to promote a product we don’t honestly love and use ourselves. Promise.)
This bag has business-class style with economy seat compatibility. And if you’re someone who loves organization, this is most definitely the bag for you. The Bento Bag has a spot for literally everything. Passport? There’s a pocket for that. Laptop? There’s a padded sleeve for that. iPad? There’s a pocket for that. Water bottle? There’s a pocket for that. Keys? There’s stretchy key leash for that. Travel-sized liquids? There’s a pocket for that. Chargers and cables? There’s a pocket for that. Even with all of these spots, there’s *still* a whole other compartment for clothes, shoes, and other accessories you may need.
I’m not saying this bag changed my life…
Ok, yes I am actually. It did. I may be a little dramatic but I am no liar! I finally found a bag to travel with that wasn’t just a black hole of panic… and finally stopped making me look like *that* flight attendant with a dozen mismatched bags attached to their suitcase.
The Art of Letting Go
Limiting myself to one rollaboard suitcase and the Bento Bag became like an accountability challenge for me. I vowed to only carry the two bags (ok, maybe a lunch bag, too, on the days when I am not being lazy about meal prep) and that’s it.
At first I didn’t think I could do it, but when I realized how much stuff can fit into the Bento Bag, I was truly shocked. Sure, I had to downsize the amount I was packing (Ok, maybe two of pants instead of four haha), but I didn’t have to downsize as much as I thought.
I started packing with intention. Rolling instead of folding. Choosing pieces that actually worked together and that I could reuse rather than a bunch of random outfits. Suddenly, I was breezing through airports, gliding down aisles, and getting on and off that hotel shuttle with ease. Plus, when I’m non-reving and end up last on and no overhead bin space, the Bento Bag fits perfectly under the seat on just about every aircraft out there. (Trust me, I’ve tried lol.)
Real Talk: It’s Not Just a Bag
It’s peace of mind. It’s the bag you reach for when you want to look like you’ve got your life together (even if you cried in the car on the way to the airport).
And for my fellow flight attendants reading this..
Yes, it fits in the airplane closet!
Yes, you can slide it behind your jumpseat!
And yes, it actually makes your commute feel slightly less like a second job!
Final Thoughts From a Reformed Overpacker
I’ll never be a minimalist (I love stuff lol) but I’ve learned that traveling light doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort. It just means making smarter choices, like choosing a bag that respects your back, your budget, and your boarding status! (Oh hey, nonrev life!)
So, if you’re still lugging around that fifty pound tote bag that doubles as a shoulder injury… maybe it’s time for you to have a Bento Bag moment!
You can thank me later. Or send me snacks. Either works for me! ;)
